WRAL-FM’s Jim Kelly on Upcoming 2020 Radiothon, The Need Doesn’t Change

MIX 101.5 Radiothon

WRAL-FM’s Jim Kelly (l to r), Bryan Lord, Sarah King & Kyle Smelser broadcast live from the lobby of Duke Children’s Hospital during MIX 101.5’s 25th Annual Radiothon in December 2019.

WRAL-FM kicks off the 26th Annual MIX 101.5 Radiothon for Duke Children’s Hospital tomorrow, Tuesday, December 15, 2020, bright and early at 6am.  The two-day event is a Hallmark of Triangle radio station, raising millions of dollars over the years to support the children, families and staff at Duke Children’s Hospital.

WRAL-FM Asst Program Director/Music Director Jim Kelly helps spearhead the event this year.  The cause is near and dear to his heart because of his personal experience having his newborn twins at Duke in 2004.

“It doesn’t matter what is going on in the world, the need doesn’t change,” he said.  “There are still sick and injured children and their families that need our support.”

COVID is causing changes to the logistics of the MIX 101.5 Radiothon, but although behind the scenes will be different, the mission and the dedication to the cause will be as strong as ever.

“Instead of broadcasting from the lobby of the Children’s Health Center, we will be live from the MIX 101.5 studios,” explained Kelly.  “No in person interviews will be happening, instead it’s lots of phone calls to families and hopefully lots of video interviews as well that we can share all over social media. It is our goal to make it sound just like any other year which means MIX listeners shouldn’t notice a difference. MIX Mornings with Kyle, Bryan and Sarah are the main players on the air, but everyone on staff plays a part every year making Radiothon the success it is.”

Tune in to WRAL-FM on Tuesday and Wednesday to listen, learn and give!
