WRAL-TV Anchors Mikaya Thurmond and Bryan Mims got a chance to experience the other side of the interview table this past weekend. The WRAL weekend news duo took the opportunity to inspire, and be inspired by, the next generation at the Southern Women’s Show at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh on Saturday, April 14, 2018.
“On Saturday, this amazing little girl named Randi, waited in the long autograph line at the Southern Women’s Home Show to tell us that she wanted to be a news reporter,” said Thurmond. “I loved her bravery. When I told Bryan what she said, we stopped the line & ‘sat down’ for an interview! She asked us what kind of stories we liked to cover and if we ever did breaking news.”
The trio ended up on the floor because Randi was not tall enough to see over the autograph table where the WRAL pair sat. Thurmond wanted to make sure Randi was comfortable for the interview.
“When I was her age, I knew I wanted to do this too,” said Thurmond. “That’s why I felt it was important to create a moment that she will never forget. She and her mom were so excited that we did that. Since the show, her mom and I have kept in contact on Facebook.”
Stay tuned. In another couple of decades, an anchor named Randi might be sitting at the WRAL News desk!
