Check out this vintage 1985 photo of Keith Harrison, Director of radio engineering, getting ready to kick the tires of the recently – arrived 1976 GMC RV converted into a mobile news van. I hope you noted the age of the vehicle when the station took possession of it; nine years old!
The description of the vehicle reads like a sales pitch from a used car salesman wearing a bright red plaid jacket: The GMC sported a brand new motor and transmission. No doubt it ran smooth as silk, as if it had been driven by an old lady only on Sunday mornings. The van was purchased in Cincinnati and then driven to Wolf Coach in Worchester, Massachusetts where the interior was customized to specifications submitted by WRAL-FM. By the time it arrived in Raleigh, it was probably due for an oil change! This front-wheel drive dream mobile sipped a mere gallon for every 10 miles, and it handled beautifully.
No doubt this rolling WRAL-FM billboard turned some heads on the streets and hopefully got folks to turn their radio dial to 101.5 FM.
